The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) continues to process Novel Food applications for insect-derived products. BSF protein is authorized for use in aquaculture feed (Regulation 2017/893) and poultry/pig feed (Regulation 2021/1372). Additional expansions for pet food ingredients are under review. Suppliers targeting EU markets must comply with production facility registration and HACCP-based safety systems.
The FDA's GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for BSF larvae in animal feed remains under evaluation. Several US producers have self-affirmed GRAS for BSF in pet food. Imported BSF products require FDA prior notice and compliance with the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). AAFCO definitions for insect-based ingredients continue to be developed.
China's Ministry of Agriculture continues to expand approved feed applications for BSF-derived ingredients. The 2026 policy framework supports organic waste-to-protein conversion projects, with provincial subsidies available in multiple regions. The insect protein industry is included in China's dual-carbon strategy, positioning BSF as a key technology for organic waste valorization.
